Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken about 3 to 4 lb, patted dry
  • 1-2 tbsp oil avocado or any neutral oil
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/3 cup BBQ sauce for brushing

Instructions

  • First, preheat the Ninja Woodfire Grill to Smoke mode at 230°F (110°C) and add pellets. Pat the chicken dry and rub it all over with the oil.
  • Next, stir together the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, salt, and pepper, and season the bird generously everywhere.

  • Then place the chicken breast-side up on the grill plates and smoke at 230°F for about 95 minutes, checking around the 50-minute mark. Do not flip it.

  • After that, check that the breast reads 165°F (74°C) and the thigh 175°F to 185°F (80°C to 85°C).
  • Finally, brush lightly with BBQ sauce, switch to Grill mode for about 2 minutes to crisp the skin, then rest 10 minutes before carving.

Notes

Nutrition values are an estimate. Cook to 165°F in the breast and 175°F to 185°F in the thigh. Mild fruit-wood pellets (apple, cherry) suit poultry; hickory is bolder.
