18 Easy Christmas Appetizers (Dips, Meatballs and Party Bites)

by Profile photo of BityBity

Every December I end up hosting at least one evening where nobody really wants a sit-down dinner, and these Christmas appetizers are what fill my table instead: bubbling dips, sticky meatballs, warm pizza bites, crispy chicken and a few cool little seafood nibbles. All eighteen are recipes from my own kitchen, so every link below takes you to something I have cooked, photographed and watched disappear at a party.

In short, this list gathers 18 easy party bites in five groups: dips, meatballs and sausage bites, bready bites, crispy chicken and steak, and seafood. Most are ready in 15 to 40 minutes, the grape jelly meatballs take about 3 hours in the slow cooker, and several can be made a day ahead.

I have grouped them the way I plan a spread, starting with dips, then meatballs and sausage bites, bready bites, crispy chicken and steak, and finally seafood. After the list you will find a guide to how many to make per guest, a make-ahead plan and my tips for keeping everything hot, cold and safe on the table.

Dips and Dippers for the Party Table

A good dip is the anchor of any table of Christmas appetizers, because people gather round it and it buys you time while the hot food finishes in the oven.

1. Crack Chicken Dip

Baked chicken dip in a glass dish topped with melted cheddar, bacon bits and sliced spring onions

In this crack chicken dip, tinned chicken, cream cheese, ranch seasoning, bacon and two kinds of cheese bake into the creamiest, most moreish dip I know. I put it out with crackers and celery sticks, and somehow the dish is always scraped clean first. It is rich, salty and wonderfully cosy on a cold night.

Good to know: serves 6 in 40 minutes, and you can assemble it up to 24 hours ahead, then add 5 to 10 minutes to the bake.

2. Smooth Hummus

Swirled chickpea dip in a white bowl with a pool of olive oil and a dusting of paprika

This smooth hummus is the fresh, lighter dip every party needs, made from one tin of chickpeas in 20 minutes. The trick is simmering the chickpeas for ten minutes first, then blending for longer than feels sensible, which gives a silky, almost whipped texture. A swirl of olive oil and paprika makes it look festive with no effort at all.

Good to know: serves 6 in 20 minutes from one tin of chickpeas; it does not freeze, so keep it in the fridge instead.

3. Sourdough Discard Crackers

Thin square crackers with crimped edges and dried herbs piled in a white bowl

Homemade crackers sound fussy, yet these take half an hour and use up the starter you would otherwise throw away. Rolled paper thin and sprinkled with herbs and flaky salt, they snap beautifully and stand up to the thickest dip. I also pile them next to a cheeseboard, where they look far smarter than shop-bought.

Good to know: ready in 30 minutes; let them cool completely on the tray, because they crisp up in those last few minutes.

4. Grinch Dip

Bright green whipped dip dotted with red heart sprinkles, served with strawberries and vanilla wafers

Grinch dip is the sweet surprise on the spread, a bright green no-bake dip ready in 15 minutes. Cream cheese, Cool Whip and vanilla whip into something light and fluffy, then a scatter of red hearts turns it into the Grinch’s growing heart. Children adore it with strawberries, and grown-ups quietly go back for more with the shortbread.

Good to know: serves 8 in 15 minutes; add the sprinkles just before serving so they do not bleed.

Meatballs and Sausage Bites

Nothing says party food quite like something on a cocktail stick. These are the hot bites I rely on most, because they hold well and feed a crowd cheaply.

5. Grape Jelly Meatballs

Glossy glazed meatballs in a white bowl on a wooden board

Grape jelly meatballs need three ingredients, one slow cooker and absolutely no stress. Frozen meatballs simmer in chilli sauce and grape jelly until the glaze turns sticky, sweet and tangy all at once. I switch the pot to warm, drop in a jar of cocktail sticks and let guests help themselves all evening.

Good to know: serves 8; cook 2 to 3 hours on high or 4 to 6 on low, and leftovers freeze for 3 months.

6. Teriyaki and Honey Mustard Party Meatballs

Saucy meatballs garnished with parsley in a brown bowl beside small jars of red sauce

These party meatballs simmer on the hob for 25 to 30 minutes, my answer when the slow cooker is already busy. Teriyaki, honey mustard dressing and a splash of hot sauce make a glaze that is sweet, savoury and gently fiery. It is the one my brother always asks for, and it cooks in the time it takes to lay the table.

Good to know: four ingredients and 2 lb of frozen meatballs, simmered for 25 to 30 minutes, serves about 10.

Once these are glazed, I tip them into a 2.5 quart mini slow cooker on the warm setting, which takes up far less room on the table than the big pot.

7. Cream Cheese Sausage Balls

Golden baked sausage balls piled on a cream scalloped plate

Cream cheese sausage balls are a proper festive classic. Spicy sausage meat, cream cheese, biscuit mix and cheddar come together in one bowl, then bake into tender, golden little balls. The cream cheese is what keeps them soft rather than dry, so they are still lovely an hour into the party.

Good to know: four ingredients, about 20 servings, and 25 minutes in the oven after a short chill.

8. Sausage Hashbrown Bites

Crispy cheesy potato and sausage balls scattered with parsley on a white platter

Think of these as sausage balls with a crispy, cheesy potato jacket. Grated hash browns go into the mix, so the outsides turn crunchy and golden while the middles stay soft. They are just as good at room temperature, which makes them perfect for a buffet or a Boxing Day brunch.

Good to know: five ingredients, serves 8, and ready in about 30 minutes at 400°F.

Bready Christmas Appetizers: Pizza Bites, Sliders and Pinwheels

These are the filling ones, the bites that stop hungry teenagers raiding the fridge before the main event.

9. Pizza Muffins

Golden pizza cups topped with melted mozzarella, black olive rings and fresh basil

A ball of pizza dough pressed into a muffin tin makes twelve little pizza cups with crisp edges and a molten middle. I love them because everyone can have their own, with no slicing and no greasy fingers. Swap the olives for pepperoni or peppers and they suit every guest.

Good to know: 12 muffins in 33 minutes; they keep 4 days in the fridge or 2 months frozen, and reheat best in the oven or air fryer.

10. Homemade Pizza Rolls

Spiral pepperoni and cheese rolls on a baking tray with a pot of marinara

Homemade pizza rolls are ready-made pizza crust, pepperoni, mozzarella and Parmesan, rolled up like a Swiss roll and sliced into pinwheels. They bake in about twelve minutes and come out golden, garlicky and stretchy with cheese. Serve them with a bowl of warm marinara for dunking and watch them vanish.

Good to know: two tubes of pizza crust make about 24 rolls; best served warm, straight from the oven.

11. Philly Cheesesteak Sliders

Soft slider buns filled with shaved steak and melted provolone in a baking tin

These Philly cheesesteak sliders tuck shaved steak, softened onions and peppers and melting provolone into a tray of sweet little buns brushed with thyme butter. Because they bake as one sheet, you cut them apart at the table, which feels generous and a bit celebratory. They are the heartiest bite here.

Good to know: 12 sliders in about 40 minutes, finished in a 400°F oven.

12. Crack Chicken Pinwheels

Sliced tortilla spirals with a creamy chicken and bacon filling on a blue board

Crack chicken pinwheels are my no-oven saviour, ready in 20 minutes. Cream cheese, ranch, cheddar, bacon and chicken get spread over big tortillas, rolled tight, chilled and sliced into neat spirals. They need nothing on the day except a sharp knife, so I make them the night before and forget about them.

Good to know: about 3 dozen slices in 20 minutes, and they can be made up to a day ahead.

Crispy Chicken and Steak Bites

A little something crunchy and meaty keeps a party going late, and these are the Christmas appetizers my friends ask me to bring. All three of these come together quickly, two of them in the air fryer.

13. Air Fryer Chicken Wings

Crisp dry rubbed wings on a wooden board around a bowl of creamy dip with carrot and celery sticks

A simple dry rub of smoked paprika, garlic and herbs, a little oil and a hot air fryer give wings with properly crackly skin and no deep fat pan. I cook them in batches as guests arrive, so there is always a fresh, sizzling plate going round.

Good to know: serves 4 in 27 minutes; pat the wings dry first for the crispiest skin.

14. Popcorn Chicken

Deep golden, craggy fried chicken pieces piled on a white plate

Popcorn chicken is little nuggets of chicken soaked in seasoned milk, pressed into spiced flour and fried until craggy and golden. There is no egg wash, which keeps it simple, yet the coating is wonderfully crunchy. Put out a few dips alongside and it becomes the bowl everyone hovers near.

Good to know: serves 4 in 30 minutes, plus at least 30 minutes for the milk marinade.

15. Air Fryer Steak Bites

Seared cubes of ribeye with a pink centre on a white plate, one speared on a fork

Cubes of ribeye tossed in Worcestershire and garlic, seared hot and finished with butter and parsley. They feel a little bit luxurious for Christmas, yet they take less than ten minutes to cook. Spear each one with a cocktail stick and you have an instant grown-up nibble.

Good to know: 18 minutes from start to finish; 1 lb of steak serves 2 as a meal or about 6 as a nibble.

Seafood Christmas Appetizers

A little seafood makes a spread feel special, and in our house prawns at Christmas are practically a tradition.

16. Shrimp Toast

Toasted bread topped with lettuce, spicy prawns, sesame carrots and sprouts beside lime halves

This shrimp toast piles spicy king prawns, sesame carrots, crisp lettuce and a tangle of sprouts onto toasted wholemeal bread. It is bright, fresh and full of crunch, a lovely contrast to all the cheesy bites. For a party, I cut each toast into fingers so they are easy to pick up.

Good to know: 4 toasts in 25 minutes; assemble just before serving, because they do not keep once built.

17. Air Fryer Shrimp

Paprika dusted prawns piled up with lemon slices and chopped parsley

Air fryer shrimp need only paprika, garlic, a little oil and six minutes in the air fryer to become a plate of juicy, smoky prawns. I serve them warm with lemon wedges, or chilled with a pot of cocktail sauce for a quick take on the old prawn cocktail. Either way, they never last long.

Good to know: serves 4 in 16 minutes; they are done when they curl into a loose C shape.

18. Ice Cube Tray Sushi

A neat cube of sushi rice and avocado topped with smoked salmon and sesame seeds on a square of nori

Ice cube tray sushi needs no rolling mat and no skill. Smoked salmon, avocado, cucumber and seasoned rice are pressed into a jumbo ice cube tray, chilled and turned out as perfect little cubes. They look so elegant on a platter that guests always assume I bought them.

Good to know: 8 cubes in about an hour including chilling; serve the same day, as the avocado browns.

How Many Christmas Appetizers Per Person?

Plan 4 to 6 bites per guest when the nibbles come before a sit-down dinner, and 10 to 15 bites per guest when they are the whole meal. This is the question I get most in December. My rule of thumb depends on whether the nibbles are the whole meal or just a warm-up before dinner.

Type of party Bites per guest Number of recipes
Drinks before a sit-down dinner 4 to 6 3 or 4
Evening drinks party, no main meal 10 to 12 6 to 8
Grazing all afternoon or evening 12 to 15 8 or more

As a guide, I aim for a balance of one dip, one meatball or sausage bite, one bready bite, one crispy bite and one cold, fresh option. That way there is something for meat eaters, vegetarians and the guest who only wants crisps. Then I add one sweet thing, usually the Grinch dip, so nobody needs pudding.

Make-Ahead Plan for Christmas Appetizers

The secret to actually enjoying your own party is doing most of the work before the doorbell rings. Here is the timeline I follow.

When What to make How to store
Up to 2 months ahead Pizza muffins, cooked grape jelly meatballs Freezer, in labelled bags
2 to 3 days ahead Sourdough discard crackers Airtight tin at room temperature
The day before Crack chicken dip (assembled, unbaked), pinwheels, hummus, Grinch dip without sprinkles Fridge, covered
On the morning Sausage ball and hash brown mixtures rolled; ice cube tray sushi pressed Fridge, on lined trays
As guests arrive Wings, steak bites, shrimp, pizza rolls, sliders, shrimp toast Straight from the oven or air fryer

In practice, that leaves just the quick hot Christmas appetizers for the last hour. If you are travelling with a dish, USU Extension has a clear guide to food safety at holiday buffets, including which foods are most at risk.

Keeping Party Food Hot, Cold and Safe

  • Use the slow cooker as a hot plate. Once the meatballs are cooked, the warm setting keeps them steaming for hours without drying out.
  • Serve small platters and swap them. Rather than one huge tray, I put out half and keep the rest in a low oven or the fridge, then replace the whole plate instead of topping it up.
  • Mind the two hour rule. WVU Extension’s buffet safety advice is to keep hot food at 140°F or above, cold food at 40°F or below, and to throw out anything left at room temperature for more than two hours.
  • Chill cold dips over ice. Nest the hummus or Grinch dip bowl inside a larger bowl of ice if the room is warm.
  • Label the bites. A little card noting nuts, seafood or pork saves guests from asking, and it looks rather charming too.

For a long evening with lots of hot bites, a chafing dish set keeps sliders, sausage balls and wings at a safe temperature without you running to the oven every half hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing and Planning

What is the most popular Christmas appetizer?

Meatballs win every time, in my experience. Grape jelly meatballs and party meatballs are cheap, easy to keep warm and loved by children and adults alike. Hot cheesy dips such as crack chicken dip come a very close second.

What are some easy Christmas appetizers I can make ahead?

Crack chicken pinwheels, hummus, sourdough crackers and Grinch dip can all be made the day before. Meanwhile, the crack chicken dip can be assembled a day ahead and baked when guests arrive, and pizza muffins freeze for two months.

Which Christmas party appetizers are the biggest crowd pleasers?

Anything warm, cheesy and easy to eat in one bite. Pizza muffins, sausage hashbrown bites, sliders and chicken wings please almost every age group, so I always include at least two of them.

Serving and Storing

How do I keep hot appetizers warm at a Christmas party?

Keep them at 140°F or above. Use a slow cooker on the warm setting for meatballs and dips, and keep trays of bites in a low oven around 200°F. After that, bring them out in small batches so each plate is hot.

How long can Christmas party food sit out?

No more than two hours at room temperature for anything perishable, including dips, meat and seafood, or one hour if the room is above 90°F. Replace platters with fresh ones rather than adding new food to old.

Which Christmas party appetizers can you freeze?

Grape jelly meatballs freeze for up to 3 months and pizza muffins for up to 2 months. Hummus, ice cube tray sushi and shrimp toast do not freeze; keep hummus in the fridge and serve the sushi and shrimp toast on the day they are made.

Which Christmas party appetizer is the quickest to make?

Grinch dip is the quickest at 15 minutes, followed by air fryer shrimp at 16 minutes and air fryer steak bites at 18 minutes. Smooth hummus and crack chicken pinwheels each take about 20 minutes.
